Large Mammals

We’re going to concentrate on the animals you’ll likely run across. We have black bears, bobcats, panthers, and hogs as far as large, potentially dangerous mammals go. You are unlikely to see any of them, except for the hogs.

It is interesting to note that when the Regional Airport at Ft. Myers was expanded and a new approach road constructed through previously undeveloped country,  both bears and panthers were sighted along and in the road for a year or two. Several panthers were struck and killed. Neither species has been seen there lately, the survivors apparently having moved on, one hopes wiser for the experience.

    • Hogs are considered an invasive, undesirable species. They can also be dangerous, especially if you get between a sow and her pigs.
“How do you know?”, you might ask.  Well, little  pigs don’t live long alone around here. If you see the cute little critters, mama’s either dead or not far away. Don’t count on “dead.”
    • Be especially cautious if you see a group of hogs. Like people, what one might not do, a group just might….
