From the North:
From the north if you are driving, find I-75 S. Keep going until you cross the Peace River at Punta Gorda. If you still see road signs warning you that, “Ice may form on roadway,” you aren’t at Punta Gorda yet. Ice belongs in a drink. Nowhere else.
When you cross the Peace River at Punta Gorda, that’s it. You’re in our area.
From Florida’s East Coast:
From the east coast of Florida, find I-75N, go west by following the signs for I-75 N (I know. I know. But often one goes east to get south, down here. Sometimes even north to go south. You’ll just have to adapt).
You’re here when you find the Naples exit.
Airports:
There are three airports serving this area. Four, if you count Ft. Lauderdale which is about 150 miles from Ft. Myers, but about 100 miles from Naples. All are first rate.
- Tampa International (TPA), about 122 miles from Ft. Myers
- Orlando International Airport (MCO), about 150 from Ft. Myers
- Southwest Regional Airport (RSW) at Ft. Myers
- Ft. Lauderdale International Airport (FLL)
You will find that it is often cheaper to fly into Orlando or Tampa than into either of the other two airports. Several flights into Ft Myers actually stop first in one of these two cities. If you are going to be renting a car, it is not going to be that much of an added inconvenience to just fly there and skip RSW. You might save a few bucks. You’ll just have to balance it out.
Orlando, of course, has its theme parks (Disney World and Universal Studios to name two) and Tampa has Busch Gardens, as well as other attractions. It’s not like you’d be getting off the airplane in some forsaken corner of the world….
